For over ten years, Project Baseline Trondheim has monitored the same underwater locations to reveal what happens when nature is affected.
We’ve seen corals die – but also new ones grow. We’ve seen how ropes, nets, and plastic choke marine life – and how hope returns when they’re removed.
Our work ranges from documenting cold-water corals in Skarnsundet, to removing ghost nets, building lobster shelters, and carrying out dive missions throughout the entire fjord system.
Everything we do serves one purpose:
To show what’s really happening beneath the surface – and to inspire more people to care for the ocean.
Project Baseline Trondheim is part of the Ocean Campaign and is powered by volunteers with a deep passion for ocean health.
Here, people from all walks of life come together with a shared goal: to see, understand, and protect life in the fjord.
This image says it all
To the left – life.
To the right – death.
Twelve years separate these two moments. Both were captured at the same location in Børsa, in the Trondheim Fjord.
In 2013, this sea shrub coral stood healthy and vibrant.
It was a small ecosystem of its own – a place where small fish, shrimp, and snails found shelter among the branches.
In 2025, it was dead.
The branches are covered in overgrowth, and silence has taken over where life once pulsed.
This is the reality beneath the surface.
It’s changing – even here, in our own fjords.
Site Manager, Vangshylla (Skarnsundet)
Veronica leads the monitoring efforts in Skarnsundet, known for its strong currents and rich marine life.
She captures moments where cold-water corals, lobsters, wolffish, and jellyfish live side by side – a small ecosystem in balance.
Through her films, we witness how reefs, wrecks, and sediments change from year to year, and how life beneath the surface constantly finds new ways to thrive.

Site Manager, Nykorallene (Børsa)
Gunnar documents the changes on the coral reefs in Børsa – one of the most vulnerable areas in the Trondheim Fjord.
He has been monitoring the same sites since 2013 and is behind most of the images that show the progression from life to death in the fjord.
Through his work, we see how plastic, nutrients, and climate change affect life on the seafloor – and why every observation matters.

Since 2013, volunteer divers from Project Baseline Trondheim have documented how life in the fjord is changing.

When we see the challenges, we take action.
We remove ghost nets, clear away ropes, and build lobster shelters to give marine life a new home.
Every effort – big or small – helps the fjord breathe again.
